Mikhail Kostin was born in Rostov-na-Donu region, Azovsky region, in the stanitsa Koisut, in the family of a fisher. In 1920 after his father’s death, the family moved to Rostov.
In 1933 M.A. Kostin entered the Rostov’s artistic college, which he finished in 1939. The artist continued the artistic education at the Moscow V.I. Surikov State Art Institute, where he was at once accepted at the third course of the graphic department. Later passed to the department of painting and in 1945 graduated from the institute on a workshop of the professors G.M. Shegal and S.V. Gerasimov.
Since 1946 to 1948 the artist worked in Vladivostok as a teacher of the artistic college, was in this time the chairman and artistic leader of the Primorsky division of the Union of artists of USSR. In 1948 in Vladivostok there was a one-man show of M. Kostin.
