Easel and mural painter, graphic artist, portraitist, landscape and genre painter, master of still life. In 1948–1952 he studied at the Repin Institute of Painting, Architecture and Sculpture in Leningrad under the tutorship of R.Frents. In 1952–1954 he attended the Surikov Moscow State Institute of Fine Arts where he studied under the tutorship of F.Modorov. In 1956–1958 he taught at Moscow’s Textile Institute, and in 1993–1998 he held the post of Professor at the Surikov State Institute of Fine Arts in Moscow. Andronov held the title of Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation; he was a USSR State Prize laureate and a Corresponding Member of RAH. He was a member of "The Group of Eight". He painted office buildings in the USSR, the USA and Ireland. In the late 1950s N.Andronov was one of the "Severe Style" leaders. His painting The Rafters (1960–1961) became a model for this art school. Later the artist was mostly inspired by images of Russian country life. When his aesthetic priorities changed, he became interested in the paintings of P.Kuznetsov, Old Russian icons, and fresco. Andronov sought to express the characteristic features of national identity by seemingly simple means exploring man’s inherent link with the countryside
